Description

The 2017 Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia was a significant moment in recent United States history, as it revealed a persistence of hatred and overt discrimination that some Americans believed was a thing of the past. What happened in Charlottesville amplified the emerging movement of white nationalism.

  • Facing History facilitators will provide tools and resources to bring these topics into your classroom to help address issues of bigotry, racism, and white nationalism.
  • Explore pieces of the book Rising out of Hatred by Eli Saslow about former white nationalist R. Derek Black, as well as the Facing History explainer on white nationalism.
  • Discuss community responses to these events and how students can choose to participate in strengthening their communities when faced with violations based on hatred and bigotry.
